Acute Admissions Unit

The Acute Admission Unit (AAU) is the primary admission area for patients experiencing the first onset of mental illness or an acute worsening of an existing condition.

This 36 bed unit has single rooms with en-suites and a small number of double rooms with en-suites. As the unit is centrally located within the hospital, it is within easy access of all facilities including a number of private and tastefully landscaped garden areas.

Your psychiatrist will visit you in the unit and can be readily contacted by staff in the event that you may have particular concerns or questions to ask. Care is delivered by staff skilled in undertaking mental status assessments, risk assessments, care plan development and attending to the needs of patients with a wide range of mental illnesses.

Patients are provided with one to one counseling and participation in group activity is encouraged.

Programs & Services

Group Programs

There is an extensive range of group programs available. These include psychoeducation programs on anxiety management, self esteem and depression awareness with particular emphasis on life skills focus.

Diversionary Activities

Patients are also encouraged to participate in a variety of diversionary activities where they can explore new ideas and develop new skills. Patients have access to dynamic and innovative art therapy and music therapy programs. Yoga, relaxation and exercise sessions are also held on a daily basis with games and fun activities available at the end of the day to help everybody unwind.

The Acute Admission Unit environment is designed for the delivery of care in the least restrictive environment. While safety for all is our first priority, this is managed in a way that allows patients to feel relaxed and comfortable within the hospital setting. Staff are always available to answer questions and the hospital has an active consumer and carer network that acts as a communication channel between the hospital and its user population.
